Offices Located in Mount Vernon WA and Orcas Island Dr. Halgren treats children, adolescents and adults depending on the individual patient’s needs or desires. Most orthodontic treatment begins when all or most of the permanent teeth have erupted. However, there are several indications when the orthodontic treatment plan is split into two separate phases (Phase I and Phase II). These indications include: severe crowding, cross bites, underbites and thumb or finger sucking habits. Phase I of orthodontic treatment is directed at correcting a major problem with the bite and Phase II, separate from the first, may be necessary when the remaining permanent teeth fully erupt. There is typically a period of 6 months to 2 years between phases I and II where braces are removed and a retainer is worn as the remaining permanent teeth erupt. Because there are benefits of interceptive treatment and consequences of waiting, Dr. Halgren and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend all children see an orthodontist by the age of 7.
